I do it so that my line inf can advance while being covered by my skirmishers / long range troops. Yesthere are a few ‘friendly-fire’ hits but they are only a few so i don’t mind, plus it is quite effective at drawing out enemy skirmishers and other line inf troops XD

skirmishers have high accuracy, if you leave a good distance between them and the line they will rarely shoot your own people.
